The Food and Drug Administration
has ordered Merck & Company to cease promotions
intended to persuade doctors to prescribe its
arthritis painkiller Vioxx, saying the promotions
minimize potential risks. Merck has until Oct.
1 to respond. A recent study comparing Vioxx to
another painkiller, naproxen, suggested that Vioxx
users faced an increased risk of heart attacks
and strokes, but many heart experts want more
research. Still, an F.D.A. advisory panel has
said Vioxx should carry a warning label about
the potential risk.
Vioxx
and Celebrex belong to a class of drugs called
Cox-2 inhibitors that are used to treat individuals
who suffer from osteoarthritis, menstrual cramps,
or other acute pain. These drugs have recently
been linked to cardiovascular problems, including
heart attacks and strokes.
The
Vioxx/Celebrex Information site offers a wealth
of information on many aspects of Vioxx and
Celebrex. We also offer legal information and
resources for anyone who has suffered health
problems due to Vioxx or Celebrex.
